N2 - Not discussing the origin of electricity and magnetism in antiquity, let me jump to pre-Maxwellian nineteenth century, in which it was clearly stated that electric charge can be divided into positive and negative charges, while the magnets, if cut, still produce only dipoles, with the so-called north and south poles each. In other words, it was observed that it is not experimentally possible to separate magnetic charges.
