Abstract

The first measurement for a doubly strange hyperon in near-threshold Au + Au collisions is presented. The multiplicity of the said hyperon is observed to increase more rapidly with centrality than the multiplicity of ∧+Σ0, but the measured ratio ≡-/(∧+Σ0) for central collisions agrees well with both statistical and transport model predictions. This agreement may be an indication that, despite the rathe short reaction times at Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) energies, the available phase space for ≡- is essentially filled.
