Abstract

Supported WO3 and super-active WO3/ZrO2 catalysts were studied. The relationships between the tungsten oxide molecular and electronic structures and the corresponding acidic catalytic activity for methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether were investigated. Methanol was dehydrated to dimethyl ether with 100% selectivity over the acidic supported WO3 catalysts. The "model" WO3/ZrO2 catalysts showed the conventional dehydrated surface WOx band at 1000-1020/cm, but the WO3/ZrO(OH)2 catalysts possessed this band as well as several others in the ∼ 820-920/cm range. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the AIChE Annual Meeting (Salt Lake, UT 11/4-9/2007).
