Abstract

Photonic techniques are being investigated for signal transmission in the next generation high energy physics experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Lightwave techniques (analog and digital) constitute a key issue in the front-ends of particle tracking detectors. External Modulation of (remotely located) cw lasers, using electro-optic intensity modulators arrays, can meet the requirements better than direct modulation of LEDs and laser diodes. The development of semiconductor modulators for LHC has focused on an asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity device. A 4-channel demonstrator with a micro-lens optical interface has been developed and tested.
