Abstract

The widespread collapse of many coastal fish stocks, coupled with the technological advancement of fishing gears drove commercial fisheries into deeper waters, beginning in the 1960s. Despite supporting many lucrative fisheries for a number of decades, the fragility of target species combined with unregulated levels of exploitation, has seen dramatic crashes of many deep-water fish stocks. This article aims to shed light on the current status of deep-water fisheries; a number of specific case-studies are described in addition to the challenges facing management efforts across the globe.
