Abstract
It is becoming increasingly recognized that the gynecologic problems encountered in the pediatric and adolescent population are unique. The breadth of pediatric and adolescent gynecology is large, spanning common gynecologic problems to complex congenital anomalies and rare conditions involving sex development. At times, symptoms can be vague and nonspecific. Girls with gynecologic conditions may present to pediatric surgeons in both the acute and nonacute settings. Therefore, it is imperative that pediatric surgeons have knowledge of the more common conditions and presentations. Common pediatric conditions and their management are reviewed. Providers must focus on a sensitive and timely approach to ensure optimal reproductive health and fertility into adulthood. More complex congenital anomalies of the reproductive tract are often difficult to treat and are best cared for by experienced specialists.
