Abstract

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are flowrelated cerebrovascular lesions consisting of three essential features – feeding arteries, draining veins, and a vascular nidus (Latin for nest). The nidus specifically is an abnormal tangle of vessels, with high-flow AV shunting and no capillary bed. Brain tissue may be interposed between the abnormal vessels of the AVM nidus based on its location and diffuseness. AVMs may be discovered incidentally or after a neurological insult such as bleeding or seizures.
