Abstract

Unlike Diabetic Ketoacidosis, which has been well described in pediatric literature, Pediatric Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State has not been discussed as extensively in current literature, as it is relatively new to pediatrics. This chapter aims to shed light on this disease process as it pertains to the pediatric population. Beginning with the presentation of a patient's case, we will discuss in detail Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State's history in medicine, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, management recommendations, and complications documented in the pediatric population.
