Abstract

Photodynamic therapy involves the use of a photosensitizer that binds to target cells or microorganisms and the use of a light source that activates the photosensitizer. One of the main applications of photodynamic therapy is photoactivated disinfection where microorganisms are selectively targeted. This antimicrobial application of photodynamic therapy has been widely investigated in dentistry, especially in the fields of periodontics and implant dentistry. This chapter outlines the current evidence on the efficacy of antimicrobial applications of photodynamic therapy for the treatment of periodontitis and peri-implant diseases.
