Abstract

Allyl chloride used as an industrial chemical is present in the urban atmosphere at low part per trillion levels. It is a suspected carcinogen and has been designated by the EPA as a hazardous air pollutant (HAP) and thus is being considered for regulatory action. However, recent studies based on mutagenic activities has indicated that products formed from the photooxidation of allyl chloride may indeed be a more important health risk than allyl chloride itself is. We have thus undertaken a study to evaluate the rates of reaction and major product formation paths for the oxidation of allyl chloride in air at atmospheric pressure.
