Abstract
A novel method for making effective and environmentally friendly (nonhalogenated) fire retarding epoxy vinyl ester (EVE) resins has been developed. Polymer nanocomposites have been developed by the formulation of POSS™ Nanostructured™ Chemicals in Derakane™ Momentum™ 441-400 resins. These formulations were prepared by blending POSS™ (∼15wt%) of varying properties into the EVE resin. The POSS™-EVE nanocomposites exhibit better fire retarding capability than pure Derakane™ resin 441-400, in regards to reduced smoke, reduced heat release rate (HRR), and increased ignition time. These nanocomposites were also found to have equivalent or better mechanical, thermal, cure and processing characteristics. The properties were also found to be comparable or better than the halogenated version of EVE resin - Derakane™ Momentum™ 510A-40. The nanoreinforced composites acquire fire-retarding characteristics via two major mechanisms: i) reduced volatilization of fuel (organic monomer/polymer), and ii) the formation of oxidatively stable, nonpermeable surface chars.
