Precision laboratory apparatus for the study of magnetic forces

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

An apparatus suitable for the study of magnetic forces by physics undergraduates is described. By using an electronic scale to determine the torque exerted on a current-carrying coil by the almost uniform magnetic field of a pair of Helmholtz coils, students can verify the Lorentz-force law for current-carrying wires to an accuracy of a few percent.
