Abstract

The long term contaminant leaching from secondary road construction materials was predicted using HYDRUS2D, a 2 dimensional, finite element water flow and solute transport model for variable saturated media, and probabilistic methods. The objective was to model water movement and predict leaching rates. Cadmium was taken as an example of unsaturated contaminant leaching. The results show that the model can be used as a guidance on source term strength based on leaching characteristics, hydraulic regimes, and pavement design. The joint modeling and probabilistic scenario analysis can be used as a decision tool to analyze the impact of contaminants on groundwater.
