Abstract
The Parallel Volume Rendering (PVR) system is an easy-to-use portable system for high performance visualization with the speed required for interactivity and steering. Its components are designed to enable user-defined computational steering and it does not require excessive buffering. PVR can be used to develop distributed visualization environments by means of the client-server metaphor. It also allows the implementation of larger distributed visualization environments with portability across several architectures.
