Quantum space foam and string theory

Abstract

String theory is originally defined as a modification of the Feynman rules in perturbation theory. It contains gravity in its perturbative spectrum. We review some recent developments which demonstrate that nonperturbative effects of quantum gravity, such as spacetime foam, arise in string theory as well.
