Abstract
A phenomenon in the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a single strong laser beam was studied. The exponential growth of coherence gratings provided a mechanism to amplify matter waves in an internal state different from the one of the amplifying medium. A cigar-shaped 87Rb condensate was produced in a cloverleaf-type Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap to demonstrate superradiant Raman scattering experimentally. The absence of higher-order forward peaks reflects the fact that the laser light is too far out of resonance with the atoms in the recoil state.
