Abstract
The literature strongly supports the benefits of exercise and physical activity as core components in the prevention of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Exercise and physical activity enhance insulin sensitivity and glycemic control, reduce blood pressure, improve dyslipidemia, and produce beneficial changes in body mass and composition. Based on the literature, structured aerobic and resistive exercise programs, as well as leisure time and physical activity of moderate or vigorous intensity, are effective in preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. A challenge in combating diabetes and metabolic syndrome appears to lie in developing effective public health approaches that support individuals in their attempt to incorporate the necessary lifestyle changes into their daily routine and maintain these changes for life.
