Abstract
It was in the year 1960 that our paths first crossed. Hans was looking for a diploma thesis with Professor Maier-Leibnitz, and I was fortunate to have him assigned to me, an assistant at the Institute of Technical Physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). I had planned to conduct experiments on the beta decay of radioactive isotopes produced by fission with thermal neutrons, using the gas-filled separator at the Garching reactor, one of the first recoil mass spectrometers designed to separate fission products by mass.
