Abstract

Broadly speaking, romantic competence refers to the extent to which one functions adaptively in the romantic domain of life. This construct is associated with the broader concept of social competence; depending on how narrowly romantic competence is defined, it may have overlapping features with general social competence (e.g., adaptive conflict negotiation) or distinct features that pertain more specifically to romantic relationships (e.g., adaptive management of sexual attractions and experiences).
