Selected ECG Review

While not a chapter in the traditional sense, this section of the book deviates from the previous chapters' didactic format. Rather than have words interspersed with images, this chapter relies on case-based learning. In “Selected ECG Review,” a series of over 120 ECGs is presented, alongside a novel explanation style. This system utilizes a two-pronged approach; the first involves identifying eight important pieces of information from the ECG (such as the rate, axis, and infarction pattern) and constructing an interpretation based upon this information. For more advanced trainees, the second component provides a deeper dive into the anatomy of the ECG, explaining why certain findings appear and how this correlates clinically with the patient. Simply put, the first prong is the “what” of the ECG, and the second prong is the “why” and “how.” This two-tiered explanation style enables both less experienced trainees, as well as more skilled trainees, to extract as much value from the book as possible.
