Abstract

Spine surgery is considered one of the most painful surgical procedures. It also carries a high risk of persistent postsurgical pain. Opioids are traditionally the main treatment of these procedures. Currently, multimodal analgesia that encompasses using different types of analgesics is considered the best approach. Enhanced recovery programs that encompass different techniques are increasingly used with better outcome. Traditionally, opioids are considered the main stay of treatment; however, efforts now are directed toward reducing that. Recently, nerve blocks in spine surgery are getting more momentum and being adopted more and more. These techniques showed opioid-sparing value.
