Abstract

We discuss a new class of stable multi-state Cellular Automata (CA). The CA significantly extends the two-state, time-irreversible CA proposed by Park, Steiglitz, and Thurston by providing for arbitrary numbers of states as well as time-reversibility. These new CA are dynamical systems possessing an enormous array of coherent particle-like structures. The particle interaction picture is surprisingly rich and includes particle production as well. 1980 Mathematics Subject Classification (1985 Revision). 58308.
