Abstract

The purpleback flying squid, Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis, is a member of the family Ommastrephidae and thought to be the most abundant large squid in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. This chapter describes the life history biology, ecology and fisheries. Because of the relatively low value of S. oualaniensis, it is not the main target in the commercial fishery but fishers still take incidental catches of the squid. More research on fisheries and ecology of S. oualaniensis are needed in the future.
