Abstract

The temporal variation of the power supplied from tides, wind stress and other sources is examined. The natural period of Long Island Sound is near 12.4 hours so resonant tides with velocities up to 4 knots occur. This is the principal power source, dissipation being mainly in bottom friction. Storm energy put into the system is also dissipated tidally. This results in increased resuspension and transport of sediment. Adequate measurements necessary to complete the energy budget are not available but estimates are made.-I.N.McCave
