Abstract

The structure and the composition of the passive films formed on 304 stainless steel in deaerated 0. 5 M H//2SO//4 have been determined by RHEED and XPS. The effect of mechanical polishing and electropolishing on the composition and structure of the passive films was examined. Amorphous and crystalline passive films were observed. Structural transitions, due to deprotonation resulted from aging at constant potential. The rate of deprotonation increased with anodic potential.
