Abstract
Vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) is used extensively in the aerospace industry to produce overlay coatings of nickel-based alloys, both for oxidation resistance and as bond coats for thermal barrier coatings. Such coatings have excellent wear properties when sprayed so as to achieve high density and good adhesion. In this study, wear resistant nickel-based alloys have been VPS sprayed and characterized for microstructure, hardness and wear properties. In addition, coatings were also formed by high velocity oxy-fuel spraying and tested. A comparison between the microstructure and the wear properties of deposits formed by the two processes is discussed in relation to differences in process variables.
