Abstract
Neutron powder diffraction was used to study Linde Y-zeolite from which Al was removed by treatment with NH3/steam or with gaseous SiCl4. The first treatment gave a framework composition Si139.7Al52.3O384 with a 24.358(1) A at 293 K (space group Fd3m); the second Si173.1Al18.9O384 with a 24.188(1) A at 293 K and 24 K and 24.171(1) A at 573 K. Rietveld refinement and difference Fourier syntheses establish the presence of a tetrahedrally coordinated Al species in the centre of the sodalite unit.-J.E.C.
