Synchrotron-enabled ex-situ and in-situ mechanistic interrogation of energy storage systems

Abstract

A complete picture of the electrochemical processes and reaction fronts within batteries is difficult to form due to the complexities of the reactions and the difficulties of analytical interrogation of those reactions. Ex-situ measurements at various stages of reaction can provide mechanistic insight. However, configurational information is lost in the process. In-situ methods are typically hindered by the cell housing. In these studies we have used the high power NSLS synchrotron to perform in-situ EDXRD. By combining diffraction data with ex-situ methods we are able to create a more complete picture of the ongoing reactions within the cell.
