Abstract
A synchrotron light source is a facility that produces multiple tunable and intense beams of light, from infrared to hard X-rays, able to be put to a range of uses. Such sources have become a mainstay of modern materials-science research, across a surprisingly diverse and flexible array of topics and applications. For example, in 2001, organizers of one symposium on the application of synchrotron light to materials science were startled to discover they had enough papers to devote an entire session to cement. Similarly, a synchrotron in Trieste was used to study a Stradivarius violin, revealing its structure as well as details about its manufacture, in a non-invasive way that did not affect the sound….
