Abstract
Next generation high energy density battery materials for application in lithium - ion batteries (LIBs) may require operating voltages beyond the limits of conventional electrolytes. Ionic liquids (ILs) are an appealing potential replacement for conventional electrolyte, offering the opportunity for higher voltage stability and appropriate conductivity when used to generate hybrid IL-solvent based electrolytes. However, few systematic studies on the physical properties of IL electrolytes are available. The effect of the structure of the IL, composition of electrolyte, and the addition of salt to the IL electrolyte was studied to determine hybrid IL electrolytes suitable for use within lithium - ion batteries.
