Abstract
The carbonylation of a RuCl3·3H2O solution in refluxing ethanol was monitored by means of infrared spectroscopy. The spectroscopic characteristics of the various intermediates were identified. Various concentrations of RuCl3·3H2O and various rates of CO bubbling were used to determine the dependence of the intermediates upon these parameters. Three main species were postulated to be present in solution during the carbonylation reaction.
