The role of endogenous electrical fields in the maintenance of bone mass

Abstract

An animal model of disuse osteoporosis is used to identify the specific mechanical strain components which are most effective for the maintenance of bone mass. The high-frequency characteristics and low amplitudes of this optimal mechanical signal implicate a mechanism of transduction dependent on the derivative of the strain. It is suggested that endogenous electric fields would satisfy this requirement. It is also shown that bone remodeling is sensitive to the exogenous induction of electric fields, and that the process demonstrates a distinct frequency and dose dependence.
