Abstract
The role of polymers in technologies for water purification is discussed. The use of membrane depends on the forms of impurities making an energy efficient reverse osmosis (RO) system possible. The major challenges with this technology is that it is difficult to find a substrate that can be mechanically strong to support the vertically aligned nanotubes, seal off the entrance to the space between the nanotubes and, allowing only the passage of water within the tube. Polymer membrane technology depends on the effective pore size of the filter. The key component for separation of impurity is the top barrier layer so it is generally made very thin and use materials that like water and reject the impurities. The use of nanofibres membranes leads to the reduction of substructure resistance to water transport, which is particularly evident for microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) and the possible introduction of water channels through embedment of nanofibrous infrastructure in the barrier layer that improve performance for nanofiltration, RO, and forward osmosis.
