Abstract
In this review we describe the role of imaging in the study of the spleen. We present the radiographic manifestations of normal and pathologic conditions using a multimodality approach that includes CT, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear radiology. A systemic approach reviewing findings in congenital anomalies, focal and diffuse diseases, trauma, vascular disorders, and miscellaneous processes is used. This is complemented with a pattern approach based on nuclear radiology findings as well as cross-sectional imaging findings (ultrasound, CT, and MRI). With this article, we attempt to respond to the new interest developed in splenic imaging that is incorporating the spleen, traditionally an 'orphan' organ, into the growing subspecialty of abdominal imaging.
